Tower and stockade – Homa Umigdal

(Hebrew) (pronounced 'Homa oo migdahl)
Type of collective settlement built as a stronghold to withstand Arab attacks during the British Mandate period in 1936-39, during "the Arab Revolt" when the establishment of new Jewish settlements was restricted by the mandatory authorities.

The British government’s attempts to freeze immigration and settlement in Eretz Israel aroused the need to find new methods of coping.

The plan was to inhabit by Jews as much Jewish owned land as possible, particularly in remote areas, by establishing "facts on the ground", which would eventually be transformed into fortified agricultural settlements.

All of the major settlement groups (mostly kibbutzim) took part in the campaign, which consisted of assembling a wooden tower crowned by a searchlight for observation and signaling, was constructed in the middle of the settlement, surrounded by a few huts.

The entire area was enclosed by a wall, 1.80m. in height, built of two wooden fences, between which was a gravel infill as protection from bullets, usually in the course of a single night.

Within less than three years, 55 new settlements were established from kibbutz Dan, in the North, to kibbutz Negba in the South.
