10 LOWER GALILEE- BEIT SHE'ARIM,
remains of the ancient Jewish city, the Jewish cemetery, Sheikh Ibrek and Alexander Zaid monument.
After the Bar-Kochva Revolt (132-135CE.) when Hadrian closed the area around Jerusalem to Jews, Beit She'arim became the alternative to the Mount of Olives, to be buried. The center of Jewish life passed from Judea to the Galilee.
In the 2nd century CE. Rabbi Judah haNasi (135-217 CE.) head of the Sanhedrin and compiler of the Mishnah (Jewish Oral Law), established the Sanhedrin at Beit She'arim until the beginning of the 3rd century, when it moved to Sepphoris. Rabbi Judah haNasi was buried in Beit She'arim. Services to the dead became the main industry of the town.
In the 19th century, a village Sheikh Ibrek, was located here. In 1938, Alexander Zaid, a leader of the "Hashomer" organization that worked to protect and defend Jewish settlements, was murdered close to his home, on the hill of the former village Sheikh Ibrek by an Arab assassin.
