Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai (יוחנן בן זכאי) was an important Jewish sage in the era of the Second Temple.
During the siege of Jerusalem in the Great Jewish Revolt he has himself put in a coffin and taken to Vespasian, whom he predicted would become Emperor. Just then, a messenger arrives from Rome with a message for Vespasian: "Rise, because Caesar has died and the prominent men of Rome have decided to seek you as their head. They have made you Caesar."
Impressed with Rabbi Yochanan's ability to predict the future, Vespasian granted him to re-establish the Sanhedrin, and after the destruction of the temple of Jerusalem and its sacrificial altars Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai led the Council of Yavne (70-90 CE), from which Rabbinic Judaism emerged. Under his leadership the council replaced animal sacrifice (in Hebrew called קרבן korban) with prayer, a practice that continues in today's worship services.
Abu Hurayrah, or Abu Horaira (603 – 681) was a companion of prophet Muhammad and his mausoleum is situated at Yavne. According to tradition the Tomb of Rabban Gamliel is in the same building as the mausoleum of Abu Hurayrah.
